Harnessing Up:

1. Put collar over head, wide side up and turn just above the head in the direction the mane grows.

2. Move the mane hair out from under the collar or the neck strap.

3. Put on the saddle from the nearside (left side).

4. Fasten the girth just so it is snug but remember to tighten it up a notch or two before putting-to..

5. Fasten the crupper.

6. Put on the bridle, the throat latch is adjusted a little tighter than it would be for riding.

7. Twist the curb chain until it is straight.  The curb is fastened so that you can get two fingers behind it.

8. Attach the traces to the collar or breast collar.

9. Attach the reins to the bit.

10. Tighten the girth and tuck it into the keepers.

 

Putting-To:

1. Find a level piece of ground.

2. Put the shafts of the vehicle into the tugs; slide the shaft in at each side. Talk to the horse as you come up behind. The  groom then holds the shafts.

3. Attach the traces to the vehicle.

4. Fasten the hold-back straps round the shaft and trace and through the footman’s loop on the shaft.

5. Fasten the tug girth round the shafts.

6. Check the hold-back straps so they are not too loose or too tight (2-3 fingers between breeching and buttlock of horse).


Un-Hitching:

1. Release the tug girth.

2. Undo the hold-back straps from round the shaft on both sides.

3. Undo the traces.

4. Check that all straps are clear and tucked in keepers so they do not dangle and hit the horse.

5. Back the vehicle out.

 

In the Grooming area:

1. Remove the bridle remembering to undo the curb chain, caveson and throat latch.

2. Take the reins off the bridle and harness

3. Remove the collar or breast collar.

4. Undo the crupper.

5. Undo the girth, remembering the false martingale.

6. Remove saddle and breeching as one piece.
